Day 7 - North to Jasper
Saturday was a travel day as we headed north some 165 miles to the town of Jasper. We took our time and made stops along the way, especially when encountering scenic overlooks that allowed us to admire some of the area's glaciers.
Arriving at Jasper you are immediately impressed that compared to Banff you are in a smaller town, a little more off the beaten path (but by no means uncomfortable). We had another snafu with the hotel we had originally booked with - there was no air conditioning (which is common in Jasper) but the killer was the room had no working windows to open. We found nice accommodations the next day at the Jasper Inn and promptly moved out (in Jasper it seemed that occupancy was definitely not 100%).
One thing we were hoping to experience in Jasper was more opportunity to see some wildlife, and it did not disappoint. Our first evening we decided to take a drive west on Route 16 and were surprised to see a bear amble across the road in the distance. We came up to the spot and watched for several minutes as he enjoyed some of the berries growing by the roadside.
