13: Maligne
Lake
One of the most famous and beautiful areas a little
south of
Jasper is Maligne (pronounced "Mah-Lean") Lake. On the lake (the largest natural lake
in the Canadian Rockies) is "Spirit Island", one of the most photographed places on the face of the
Earth. The only
way to reach the island is by boat, so naturally we signed up for a cruise on the lake out to see this
iconic, tinysland.
Even without the island the pristine lake
surrounded by glacier-topped mountains would make it a memorable location on anyone's trip to the
Canadian Rockies.
On the return trip from Spirit Island the tour
guide let Dave pilot the boat back across a part of the lake. Such friendly people everywhere
we went made the time spent in the Canadian Rockies most enjoyable.
